John Prine opened his Gentilly Stage-closing set Friday with "Spanish Pipedream," which contains the lyrics, "Blow up your TV, throw away your paper," advice I can only halfway officially endorse.
Then Prine explained that he was missing his usual bass player, Dave Jacques, because he was having a baby.
"Actually his wife's havin' it," Prine said. "He's just standing around not knowing what to do." About halfway into the set - just before "Dear Abby," and as the rain began to intensify -- Prine wondered how the delivery was progressing.
"I bet Dave's had that baby by now," he said."

What are the Prine's Listening to?
In a recent correspondence with Fiona Prine she revealed that she and John were fond of the song "Fiona" listed on Sean Patrick McGraw's CD "Songs For A Saturday Night". The song isn't about our Fiona Prine, but as she and John note - "the song is catchy and we would like to share this info with John's fans" I have heard the whole album now (3 times!) and agree with the Prine's, not only is "Fiona" lovely (the song and the lady ) but McGraw's whole album is wonderful with several "catchy" fun and beautiful songs/melodies! His voice reminds me a little of Lyle Lovett with Bruce Springsteen looks. ...Here's a little tidbit to tuck away... John Prine and Mac Wiseman have been hanging out at the Butcher Shop together. John has been a fan of Mac's for a long long time and as they cut and picked at the meaty songs they always loved, they laid down and album full of tracks! Delivery date will hopefully be in early 2007 to warm your hearts and chase away the winter chill!
